Linux Kernel up to 6.18.20/6.19.10/7.0-rc5 kernel/futex/core.c futex_key_to_node_opt use after free

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.18.20/6.19.10/7.0-rc5 and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is the function futex_key_to_node_opt of the file kernel/futex/core.c. Performing a manipulation results in use after free. This vulnerability is identified as CVE-2026-23415. There is not any exploit available. The affected component should be upgraded.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.18.20/6.19.10/7.0-rc5. This affects the function futex_key_to_node_opt of the file kernel/futex/core.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a use after free vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-416. Referencing memory after it has been freed can cause a program to crash, use unexpected values, or execute code. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: futex: Fix UaF between futex_key_to_node_opt() and vma_replace_policy() During futex_key_to_node_opt() execution, vma->vm_policy is read under speculative mmap lock and RCU. Concurrently, mbind() may call vma_replace_policy() which frees the old mempolicy immediately via kmem_cache_free(). This creates a race where __futex_key_to_node() dereferences a freed mempolicy pointer, causing a use-after-free read of mpol->mode. [ 151.412631] BUG: KASAN: slab-use-after-free in __futex_key_to_node (kernel/futex/core.c:349) [ 151.414046] Read of size 2 at addr ffff888001c49634 by task e/87 [ 151.415969] Call Trace: [ 151.416732] __asan_load2 (mm/kasan/generic.c:271) [ 151.416777] __futex_key_to_node (kernel/futex/core.c:349) [ 151.416822] get_futex_key (kernel/futex/core.c:374 kernel/futex/core.c:386 kernel/futex/core.c:593) Fix by adding rcu to __mpol_put().

The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2026-23415 since 01/13/2026. The exploitability is told to be easy. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 04/02/2026).

Upgrading to version 6.18.21, 6.19.11 or 7.0-rc6 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 853f70c67d1b37e368fdcb3e328c4b8c04f53ac0/7e196194ea27bd49adf3551e2aceb83498eb73fe/190a8c48ff623c3d67cb295b4536a660db2012aa is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at EUVD (EUVD-2026-18196). If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
