Details
A vulnerability was found in OISF Suricata up to 8.0.3 and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is an unknown code block of the component MIME Encoded Message Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a algorithmic complexity vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-407. An algorithm in a product has an inefficient worst-case computational complexity that may be detrimental to system performance and can be triggered by an attacker, typically using crafted manipulations that ensure that the worst case is being reached. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:
Suricata is a network IDS, IPS and NSM engine. From version 8.0.0 to before version 8.0.4, there is a quadratic complexity issue when searching for URLs in mime encoded messages over SMTP leading to a performance impact. This issue has been patched in version 8.0.4.
The advisory is shared for download at github.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-31934 since 03/10/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1499.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 304890 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2026-31934), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 8.0.4 eliminates this vulnerability.
