MariaDB up to 11.4.9/11.8.5/12.2.1 Authentication Plugin caching_sha2_password memory allocation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in MariaDB up to 11.4.9/11.8.5/12.2.1. It has been classified as problematic. This affects the function caching_sha2_password of the component Authentication Plugin. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory allocation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-789. The product allocates memory based on an untrusted, large size value, but it does not ensure that the size is within expected limits, allowing arbitrary amounts of memory to be allocated. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:

An issue was discovered in MariaDB Server before 11.4.10, 11.5.x through 11.8.x before 11.8.6, and 12.x before 12.2.2. If the caching_sha2_password authentication plugin is installed, and some user accounts are configured to use it, a large packet can crash the server because sha256_crypt_r uses alloca.

The advisory is shared at jira.mariadb.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2026-35549 since 04/03/2026. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 305108 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2026-35549), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 11.4.10, 11.8.6 or 12.2.2 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (305108) and EUVD (EUVD-2026-18595). Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
