A vulnerability was found in Citrix Presentation Server (Connectivity Software) (the affected version is unknown). It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code of the component IMA Service. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Buffer overflow in the Independent Management Architecture (IMA) service in Citrix Presentation Server (MetaFrame Presentation Server) 4.5 and earlier, Access Essentials 2.0 and earlier, and Desktop Server 1.0 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via an invalid size value in a packet to TCP port 2512 or 2513.
The bug was discovered 07/20/2007. The weakness was presented 01/17/2008 by Eric Detoisien (TippingPoint) with ZDI (Website). The advisory is shared at support.citrix.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2008-0356 since 01/18/2008. The attack needs to be initiated within the local network. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 179 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69128 (Citrix Presentation Server 4.5 Code Execution), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115991 (Citrix Presentation Server IMA Service Buffer Overflow Vulnerability).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at support.citrix.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 13519. In this case the pattern |FF FF FF| is used for detection. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 5469.
