Snort 2.6.1.1/2.6.1.2/2.7 Beta1 frag3 Preprocessor denial of service

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Snort 2.6.1.1/2.6.1.2/2.7 Beta1. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code block of the component frag3 Preprocessor. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:

The frag3 preprocessor in Snort 2.6.1.1, 2.6.1.2, and 2.7.0 beta, when configured for inline use on Linux without the ip_conntrack module loaded, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (segmentation fault and application crash) via certain UDP packets produced by send_morefrag_packet and send_overlap_packet.

The weakness was released 02/02/2007 by Joel Ebrahimi and Panda Software (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at milw0rm.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2007-1398 since 03/10/2007. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

A public exploit has been developed by Antimatt3r in ANSI C and been published 2 months after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept.

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (33149), Exploit-DB (3434), SecurityFocus (BID 22872†), OSVDB (33024†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-40918†). Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
