parse-community parse-server up to 8.6.72/9.7.1-alpha.3 Header Content-Type interpretation conflict

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in parse-community parse-server up to 8.6.72/9.7.1-alpha.3 and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown part of the component Header Handler. The manipulation of the argument Content-Type with an unknown input leads to a interpretation conflict vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-436. Product A handles inputs or steps differently than Product B, which causes A to perform incorrect actions based on its perception of B's state. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Parse Server is an open source backend that can be deployed to any infrastructure that can run Node.js. Prior to 8.6.73 and 9.7.1-alpha.4, a file can be uploaded with a filename extension that passes the file extension allowlist (e.g., .txt) but with a Content-Type header that differs from the extension (e.g., text/html). The Content-Type is passed to the storage adapter without consistency validation. Storage adapters that store and serve the provided Content-Type (such as S3 or GCS) serve the file with the mismatched Content-Type. The default GridFS adapter is not affected because it derives Content-Type from the filename at serving time. This vulnerability is fixed in 8.6.73 and 9.7.1-alpha.4.

The advisory is available at github.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2026-35200 since 04/01/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

Upgrading to version 8.6.73 or 9.7.1-alpha.4 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
