Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in pi-hole FTL up to 6.5. Affected by this issue is an unknown code block of the component Web Interface. The manipulation of the argument dhcp.hosts with an unknown input leads to a os command injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-78. The product constructs all or part of an OS command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended OS command when it is sent to a downstream component. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
FTLDNS (pihole-FTL) provides an interactive API and also generates statistics for Pi-hole's Web interface. From 6.0 to before 6.6, the Pi-hole FTL engine contains a Remote Code Execution (RCE) vulnerability in the DHCP hosts configuration parameter (dhcp.hosts). This vulnerability allows an authenticated attacker to inject arbitrary dnsmasq configuration directives through newline characters, ultimately achieving command execution on the underlying system. This vulnerability is fixed in 6.6.
The advisory is shared for download at github.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-35521 since 04/03/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1202.
Upgrading to version 6.6 eliminates this vulnerability.
