A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in PHP 5.2.0 (Programming Language Software). Affected is an unknown function. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Buffer underflow in the PHP_FILTER_TRIM_DEFAULT macro in the filtering extension (ext/filter) in PHP 5.2.0 allows context-dependent attackers to execute arbitrary code by calling filter_var with certain modes such as FILTER_VALIDATE_INT, which causes filter to write a null byte in whitespace that precedes the buffer.
The bug was discovered 03/12/2007. The weakness was released 03/14/2007 by Stefan Esser (Website). The advisory is shared for download at debian.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2007-1453 since 03/14/2007. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 25100 (Debian DSA-1283-1 : php5 - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165074 (OpenSUSE Security Update for PHP4, PHP5 (SUSE-SA:2007:032)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
