The compress.bzip2:// URL wrapper provided by the bz2 extension in PHP before 4.4.7, and 5.x before 5.2.2, does not implement safemode or open_basedir checks, which allows remote attackers to read bzip2 archives located outside of the intended directories.

The bug was discovered 03/13/2007. The weakness was shared 03/14/2007 by DiGiT with Secunia Research (Website). The advisory is shared for download at vupen.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2007-1461 since 03/14/2007. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068.
