Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in khyrenz parseusbs up to 1.8. This affects the function os.popen of the file parseUSBs.py of the component LNK File Parser. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a os command injection vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-78. The product constructs all or part of an OS command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended OS command when it is sent to a downstream component. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
parseusbs before 1.9 contains an OS command injection vulnerability in parseUSBs.py where LNK file paths are passed unsanitized into an os.popen() shell command, allowing arbitrary command execution via crafted .lnk filenames containing shell metacharacters. An attacker can craft a .lnk filename with embedded shell metacharacters that execute arbitrary commands on the forensic examiner's machine during USB artifact parsing.
The weakness was released with Mobasi Security Team. The advisory is shared at github.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2026-40029 since 04/08/2026. The exploitability is told to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
