Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in McAfee ProtectionPilot 1.1.1/1.5.0. Affected is the function swprintf in the library sitemanager.dll of the component Management Console. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a stack-based overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-121. A stack-based buffer overflow condition is a condition where the buffer being overwritten is allocated on the stack (i.e., is a local variable or, rarely, a parameter to a function). This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Multiple stack-based buffer overflows in the SiteManager.SiteMgr.1 ActiveX control (SiteManager.dll) in the ePO management console in McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator (ePO) before 3.6.1 Patch 1 and ProtectionPilot (PRP) before 1.5.0 HotFix allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a long argument to the (1) ExportSiteList and (2) VerifyPackageCatalog functions, and (3) unspecified vectors involving a swprintf function call.
The bug was discovered 03/13/2007. The weakness was presented 03/16/2007 by cocoruder with Fortinet as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is available at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2007-1498 since 03/16/2007. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 24814 (ePolicy Orchestrator SiteManager ActiveX Control Multiple Buffer Overflows), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 116025 (McAfee EPolicy Orchestrator SiteManager.DLL ActiveX Control Remote Buffer Overflow Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading to version 3.6.1 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 5552.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (32990), Tenable (24814), SecurityFocus (BID 22952†), OSVDB (33796†) and Secunia (SA24466†). If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
