Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as very critical, has been found in Atrium MERCUR IMAPD (the affected version unknown). This issue affects an unknown part of the file mcrimap4.exe of the component IMAP4. The manipulation of the argument NTLMSSP with an unknown input leads to a stack-based overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-121. A stack-based buffer overflow condition is a condition where the buffer being overwritten is allocated on the stack (i.e., is a local variable or, rarely, a parameter to a function). Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Multiple integer signedness errors in the NTLM implementation in Atrium MERCUR IMAPD (mcrimap4.exe) 5.00.14, with SP4, allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a long NTLMSSP argument that triggers a stack-based buffer overflow.
The bug was discovered 03/20/2007. The weakness was shared 03/20/2007 with mu-b (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at archives.neohapsis.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2007-1578 since 03/21/2007. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 08/30/2024).
A public exploit has been developed in Perl and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is available at digit-labs.org. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 25118 (MERCUR Messaging IMAP Server NTLM Authentication NTLMSSP Argument Remote Overflow), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gain a shell remotely and running in the context r.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 5562.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (33120), Exploit-DB (3527), Tenable (25118), SecurityFocus (BID 23058†) and OSVDB (33545†). Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
