PHP up to 4.0.0 Error memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in PHP up to 4.0.0 (Programming Language Software). It has been classified as critical. This affects an unknown function of the component Error Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

The resource system in PHP 4.0.0 through 4.4.6 and 5.0.0 through 5.2.1 allows context-dependent attackers to execute arbitrary code by interrupting certain functions in the GD (ext/gd) extension and unspecified other extensions via a userspace error handler, which can be used to destroy and modify internal resources.

The weakness was presented 03/21/2007 by Stefan Esser (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at milw0rm.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2007-1582 since 03/21/2007. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 25159 (PHP < 4.4.7 / 5.2.2 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses.

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (33304), Tenable (25159), SecurityFocus (BID 23046†), Secunia (SA24542†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-37307†). See VDB-35862, VDB-35861, VDB-35762 and VDB-35695 for similar entries. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
