A patch should be applied to remediate this issue.
Details
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in radareorg radare2 (the affected version is unknown). This vulnerability affects the function DW_TAG_formal_parameter of the component ELF Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a os command injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-78. The product constructs all or part of an OS command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended OS command when it is sent to a downstream component. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
radare2 prior to commit bc5a890 contains a command injection vulnerability in the afsv/afsvj command path where crafted ELF binaries can embed malicious r2 command sequences as DWARF DW_TAG_formal_parameter names. Attackers can craft a binary with shell commands in DWARF parameter names that execute when radare2 analyzes the binary with aaa and subsequently runs afsvj, allowing arbitrary shell command execution through the unsanitized parameter interpolation in the pfq command string.
The weakness was presented by Shota Zaizen. The advisory is available at github.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2026-40527 since 04/13/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1202 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
Applying the patch bc5a89033db3ecb5b1f7bf681fc6ba4dcfc14683 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com.
