Details
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in theskumar python-dotenv up to 1.2.1. This vulnerability affects the function set_key/unset_key. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a link following vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-59. The product attempts to access a file based on the filename, but it does not properly prevent that filename from identifying a link or shortcut that resolves to an unintended resource. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
python-dotenv reads key-value pairs from a .env file and can set them as environment variables. Prior to version 1.2.2, `set_key()` and `unset_key()` in python-dotenv follow symbolic links when rewriting `.env` files, allowing a local attacker to overwrite arbitrary files via a crafted symlink when a cross-device rename fallback is triggered. Users should upgrade to v.1.2.2 or, as a workaround, apply the patch manually.
The advisory is available at github.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2026-28684 since 03/02/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
