AcademySoftwareFoundation OpenEXR up to 3.2.7/3.3.9/3.4.9 EXR File internal_dwa_compressor.h integer overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in AcademySoftwareFoundation OpenEXR up to 3.2.7/3.3.9/3.4.9 and classified as critical. This issue affects some unknown processing of the file internal_dwa_compressor.h of the component EXR File Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

OpenEXR provides the specification and reference implementation of the EXR file format, an image storage format for the motion picture industry. In versions 3.4.0 through 3.4.9, 3.3.0 through 3.3.9, and 3.2.0 through 3.2.7, `internal_dwa_compressor.h:1040` performs `chan->width * chan->bytes_per_element` in `int32` arithmetic without a `(size_t)` cast. This is the same overflow pattern fixed in other decoders by CVE-2026-34589/34588/34544, but this line was missed. Versions 3.4.10, 3.3.10, and 3.2.8 contain a fix that addresses `internal_dwa_compressor.h:1040`.

The advisory is shared at github.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2026-40250 since 04/10/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 309647 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2026-40250), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 3.2.8, 3.3.10 or 3.4.10 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at github.com.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (309647). Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
