Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.18.21/6.19.11. It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is the function algif_aead of the component crypto. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource transfer vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-669. The product does not properly transfer a resource/behavior to another sphere, or improperly imports a resource/behavior from another sphere, in a manner that provides unintended control over that resource. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: crypto: algif_aead - Revert to operating out-of-place This mostly reverts commit 72548b093ee3 except for the copying of the associated data. There is no benefit in operating in-place in algif_aead since the source and destination come from different mappings. Get rid of all the complexity added for in-place operation and just copy the AD directly.
The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-31431 since 03/09/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 05/18/2026). This vulnerability has a historic impact due to its background and reception.
A public exploit has been developed by junorouse in Python. The exploit is available at github.com. It is declared as attacked. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 309203 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2026-31431), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. This issue was added on 05/01/2026 to the CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog with a due date of 05/15/2026:
"Apply mitigations per vendor instructions, follow applicable BOD 22-01 guidance for cloud services, or discontinue use of the product if mitigations are unavailable.Upgrading to version 6.18.22 or 6.19.12 eliminates this vulnerability.
