Linux Kernel up to 6.12.79/6.18.20/6.19.10 dmaengine llist_abort_desc null pointer dereference

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability labeled as critical has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.79/6.18.20/6.19.10. Impacted is the function llist_abort_desc of the component dmaengine. Executing a manipulation can lead to null pointer dereference. This vulnerability appears as CVE-2026-31436. There is no available exploit. The affected component should be upgraded.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.79/6.18.20/6.19.10. This vulnerability affects the function llist_abort_desc of the component dmaengine. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: dmaengine: idxd: fix possible wrong descriptor completion in llist_abort_desc() At the end of this function, d is the traversal cursor of flist, but the code completes found instead. This can lead to issues such as NULL pointer dereferences, double completion, or descriptor leaks. Fix this by completing d instead of found in the final list_for_each_entry_safe() loop.

The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2026-31436 since 03/09/2026. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 324048 (SUSE SLED15: cluster-md-kmp-default / dlm-kmp-default / gfs2-kmp-default / etc (SUSE-SU-2026:2238-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 6.12.80, 6.18.21 or 6.19.11 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch e21da2ad8844585040fe4b82be1ad2fe99d40074/82656e8daf8de00935ae91b91bed43f4d6e0d644/0e4f43779d550e559be13a5cdb763bad92c4cc99/e1c9866173c5f8521f2d0768547a01508cb9ff27 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (324048) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2026-1252). If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
