Linux Kernel up to 6.18.20/6.19.10 l2cap_conn_del deadlock

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.18.20/6.19.10. This issue affects the function l2cap_conn_del. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a deadlock vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-833. The product contains multiple threads or executable segments that are waiting for each other to release a necessary lock, resulting in deadlock. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: Bluetooth: L2CAP: Fix deadlock in l2cap_conn_del() l2cap_conn_del() calls cancel_delayed_work_sync() for both info_timer and id_addr_timer while holding conn->lock. However, the work functions l2cap_info_timeout() and l2cap_conn_update_id_addr() both acquire conn->lock, creating a potential AB-BA deadlock if the work is already executing when l2cap_conn_del() takes the lock. Move the work cancellations before acquiring conn->lock and use disable_delayed_work_sync() to additionally prevent the works from being rearmed after cancellation, consistent with the pattern used in hci_conn_del().

It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2026-31499 since 03/09/2026. The exploitation is known to be difficult. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 329305 (openSUSE 16: cluster-md-kmp-64kb / cluster-md-kmp-azure / cluster-md-kmp-default / etc (openSUSE-SU-2026:21388-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 6.18.21 or 6.19.11 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 3f26ecbd9cde621dd94be7ef252c7210b965a5c7/d008460de352e534f6721de829b093368564ec66/00fdebbbc557a2fc21321ff2eaa22fd70c078608 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (329305) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2026-1252). Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
