This vulnerability is identified as CVE-2026-31527. There is not any exploit available.
You should upgrade the affected component.
Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.79/6.18.20/6.19.10. This affects the function __driver_attach. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a use after free vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-416. Referencing memory after it has been freed can cause a program to crash, use unexpected values, or execute code. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: driver core: platform: use generic driver_override infrastructure When a driver is probed through __driver_attach(), the bus' match() callback is called without the device lock held, thus accessing the driver_override field without a lock, which can cause a UAF. Fix this by using the driver-core driver_override infrastructure taking care of proper locking internally. Note that calling match() from __driver_attach() without the device lock held is intentional. [1]
The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2026-31527 since 03/09/2026. The exploitability is told to be easy. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 07/26/2026).
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 316948 (Amazon Linux 2023 : bpftool6.18, kernel6.18, kernel6.18-devel (ALAS2023-2026-1746)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 6.12.80, 6.18.21 or 6.19.11 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 9a6086d2a828dd2ff74cf9abcae456670febd71f/7c02a9bd7d14a89065fcf672b86d8e1d1a41d3b1/edee7ee5a14c3b33f6d54641f5af5c5e9180992d/2b38efc05bf7a8568ec74bfffea0f5cfa62bc01d is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (316948) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2026-1252). If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
