An attacker can send a notify request that causes a new secondary domain to be added to the bind backend, but causes said backend to update its configuration to an invalid one, leading to the backend no longer able to run on the next restart, requiring manual operation to fix it.
The weakness was disclosed by Vitaly Simonovich. The advisory is shared at docs.powerdns.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2026-33608 since 03/23/2026. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. Upgrading to version 4.9.14 or 5.0.4 eliminates this vulnerability.
