NetBSD up to 4.0 clnp_route structure memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in NetBSD up to 4.0. This issue affects the function clnp_route. The manipulation of the argument structure leads to memory corruption. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2007-1677. No exploit exists.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in NetBSD up to 4.0 (Operating System) and classified as critical. This issue affects the function clnp_route. The manipulation of the argument structure with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Multiple buffer overflows in the ISO network protocol support in the NetBSD kernel 2.0 through 4.0_BETA2, and NetBSD-current before 20070329, allow local users to execute arbitrary code via long parameters to certain functions, as demonstrated by a long sockaddr structure argument to the clnp_route function.

The weakness was disclosed 03/29/2007 by Christer Oberg (Website). The advisory is shared at ftp.netbsd.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2007-1677 since 03/26/2007. An attack has to be approached locally. The successful exploitation needs a simple authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (33381), SecurityFocus (BID 23193†), OSVDB (43596†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1017832†). Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
