Rclone up to 1.73.4 RC Endpoint options/set missing authentication

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Rclone up to 1.73.4. Affected by this issue is an unknown code block of the file options/set of the component RC Endpoint. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a missing authentication vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-306. The product does not perform any authentication for functionality that requires a provable user identity or consumes a significant amount of resources. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Rclone is a command-line program to sync files and directories to and from different cloud storage providers. The RC endpoint `options/set` is exposed without `AuthRequired: true`, but it can mutate global runtime configuration, including the RC option block itself. Starting in version 1.45.0 and prior to version 1.73.5, an unauthenticated attacker can set `rc.NoAuth=true`, which disables the authorization gate for many RC methods registered with `AuthRequired: true` on reachable RC servers that are started without global HTTP authentication. This can lead to unauthorized access to sensitive administrative functionality, including configuration and operational RC methods. Version 1.73.5 patches the issue.

The advisory is shared for download at github.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-41176 since 04/17/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 314577 (Amazon Linux 2 : rclone, --advisory ALAS2-2026-3285 (ALAS-2026-3285)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 1.73.5 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (314577). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
