A vulnerability was found in Symantec Norton Internet Security up to 9.1.0.32. It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is the function ssdt of the component Function Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:
SPBBCDrv.sys in Symantec Norton Personal Firewall 2006 9.1.0.33 and 9.1.1.7 does not validate certain arguments before being passed to hooked SSDT function handlers, which allows local users to cause a denial of service (crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via crafted arguments to the (1) NtCreateMutant and (2) NtOpenEvent functions. NOTE: it was later reported that Norton Internet Security 2008 15.0.0.60, and possibly other versions back to 2006, are also affected.
The bug was discovered 04/01/2007. The weakness was published 04/01/2007 by David Matousek (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at securitytracker.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2007-1793 since 04/02/2007. The exploitation appears to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Upgrading to version 9.1.0.33 eliminates this vulnerability.
