Linux Kernel up to 6.12.79/6.18.20/6.19.10 deadlock

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.79/6.18.20/6.19.10. Affected by this issue is some unknown processing. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a deadlock vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-833. The product contains multiple threads or executable segments that are waiting for each other to release a necessary lock, resulting in deadlock. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: xfs: scrub: unlock dquot before early return in quota scrub xchk_quota_item can return early after calling xchk_fblock_process_error. When that helper returns false, the function returned immediately without dropping dq->q_qlock, which can leave the dquot lock held and risk lock leaks or deadlocks in later quota operations. Fix this by unlocking dq->q_qlock before the early return.

The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-31556 since 03/09/2026. The exploitation is known to be difficult. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 321588 (SUSE SLES16 Security Update : kernel (SUSE-SU-2026:22127-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 6.12.80, 6.18.21 or 6.19.11 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch e822f535273af0e8968eab7acc0cea0b90dd25af/3b0c3414b308e6822cda90bf99f7eac94d4cca2b/d128fc0c5c2b19224927d4fd2a46c2fe6a1f606f/268378b6ad20569af0d1957992de1c8b16c6e900 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (321588) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2026-1279). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
