Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.79/6.18.20/6.19.10. It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function sys_futex_requeue of the component futex. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a use after free vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-416. Referencing memory after it has been freed can cause a program to crash, use unexpected values, or execute code. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: futex: Require sys_futex_requeue() to have identical flags Nicholas reported that his LLM found it was possible to create a UaF when sys_futex_requeue() is used with different flags. The initial motivation for allowing different flags was the variable sized futex, but since that hasn't been merged (yet), simply mandate the flags are identical, as is the case for the old style sys_futex() requeue operations.
The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2026-31554 since 03/09/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 05/28/2026).
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 316948 (Amazon Linux 2023 : bpftool6.18, kernel6.18, kernel6.18-devel (ALAS2023-2026-1746)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 6.12.80, 6.18.21 or 6.19.11 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 18b7d09c2b794c71d4252f3ea2cf84ad12b73d6a/e2f78c7ec1655fedd945366151ba54fcb9580508/19f94b39058681dec64a10ebeb6f23fe7fc3f77a is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (316948) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2026-1279). Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
