Linux Kernel up to 6.12.82/6.18.23/6.19.13/7.0.0 USB Interface memory leak

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.82/6.18.23/6.19.13/7.0.0 and classified as critical. This issue affects some unknown processing of the component USB Interface. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory leak vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-401. The product does not sufficiently track and release allocated memory after it has been used, which slowly consumes remaining memory. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: wifi: rtw88: fix device leak on probe failure Driver core holds a reference to the USB interface and its parent USB device while the interface is bound to a driver and there is no need to take additional references unless the structures are needed after disconnect. This driver takes a reference to the USB device during probe but does not to release it on all probe errors (e.g. when descriptor parsing fails). Drop the redundant device reference to fix the leak, reduce cargo culting, make it easier to spot drivers where an extra reference is needed, and reduce the risk of further memory leaks.

The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2026-31604 since 03/09/2026. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 325421 (Ubuntu 26.04 LTS : Linux kernel (NVIDIA) vulnerabilities (USN-8507-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 6.12.83, 6.18.24, 6.19.14 or 7.0.1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch a4f4371d194dfa5473cc961f86194084b1b13a69/89a9c1bc7d797120bcc290864e0cb10a440a677f/af7307e96dad00bcc2675dac650d8558a52f2c6f/25a827b7e1d5747a255bdc757f1d3e9e1e8a4e2a is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (325421) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2026-1279). Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
