Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.82/6.18.23/6.19.13/7.0.0. This affects the function ocfs2_fault of the file mm/filemap.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a use after free vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-416. Referencing memory after it has been freed can cause a program to crash, use unexpected values, or execute code. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ocfs2: fix use-after-free in ocfs2_fault() when VM_FAULT_RETRY filemap_fault() may drop the mmap_lock before returning VM_FAULT_RETRY, as documented in mm/filemap.c: "If our return value has VM_FAULT_RETRY set, it's because the mmap_lock may be dropped before doing I/O or by lock_folio_maybe_drop_mmap()." When this happens, a concurrent munmap() can call remove_vma() and free the vm_area_struct via RCU. The saved 'vma' pointer in ocfs2_fault() then becomes a dangling pointer, and the subsequent trace_ocfs2_fault() call dereferences it -- a use-after-free. Fix this by saving ip_blkno as a plain integer before calling filemap_fault(), and removing vma from the trace event. Since ip_blkno is copied by value before the lock can be dropped, it remains valid regardless of what happens to the vma or inode afterward.
The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2026-31597 since 03/09/2026. The exploitability is told to be easy. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 06/03/2026).
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 310324 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2026-31597), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 6.12.83, 6.18.24, 6.19.14 or 7.0.1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 4cf2768a0291a0cdd0dae801ea0eafa3878a349d/d45ff441b416d4aa1af72b1db23d959601c04da2/76a602fdbb78dd05b2da06f74a988cebc97e82d0/925bf22c1b823e231b1baea761fe8a1512e442f2 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (310324) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2026-1279). Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
