Linux Kernel up to 6.6.134/6.12.81/6.18.22/6.19.12 rxrpc_input_packet_on_conn denial of service

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.6.134/6.12.81/6.18.22/6.19.12. This issue affects the function rxrpc_input_packet_on_conn. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: rxrpc: Only put the call ref if one was acquired rxrpc_input_packet_on_conn() can process a to-client packet after the current client call on the channel has already been torn down. In that case chan->call is NULL, rxrpc_try_get_call() returns NULL and there is no reference to drop. The client-side implicit-end error path does not account for that and unconditionally calls rxrpc_put_call(). This turns a protocol error path into a kernel crash instead of rejecting the packet. Only drop the call reference if one was actually acquired. Keep the existing protocol error handling unchanged.

The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2026-31638 since 03/09/2026. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

Upgrading to version 6.6.135, 6.12.82, 6.18.23 or 6.19.13 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch b8f66447448d6c305a51413a67ec8ed26aa7d1dd/0c156aff8a2d4fa0d61db7837641975cf0e5452d/8299ca146489664e3c0c90a3b8900d8335b1ede4/9fb09861e2b8d1abfe2efaf260c9f1d30080ea38/6331f1b24a3e85465f6454e003a3e6c22005a5c5 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2026-1279). If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
