Details
A vulnerability was found in rust-openssl up to 0.10.77 and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is the function _from_pem_callback of the component API. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-125. The product reads data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
rust-openssl provides OpenSSL bindings for the Rust programming language. From 0.9.0 to before 0.10.78, the *_from_pem_callback APIs did not validate the length returned by the user's callback. A password callback that returns a value larger than the buffer it was given can cause some versions of OpenSSL to over-read this buffer. OpenSSL 3.x is not affected by this. This vulnerability is fixed in 0.10.78.
The advisory is shared for download at github.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-41677 since 04/22/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 05/22/2026).
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 311730 (Fedora 43 : rust-openssl / rust-openssl-sys (2026-16a3cea414)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 0.10.78 eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (311730) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2026-1657). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
