Linux Kernel up to 6.12.82/6.18.23/6.19.13 netfilter eui64_mt6 comparison

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability marked as critical has been reported in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.82/6.18.23/6.19.13. This affects the function eui64_mt6 of the component netfilter. This manipulation causes comparison. This vulnerability is tracked as CVE-2026-31685. No exploit exists. It is suggested to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.82/6.18.23/6.19.13. Affected by this vulnerability is the function eui64_mt6 of the component netfilter. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a comparison vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-697. The product compares two entities in a security-relevant context, but the comparison is incorrect, which may lead to resultant weaknesses. The impact remains unknown. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: netfilter: ip6t_eui64: reject invalid MAC header for all packets `eui64_mt6()` derives a modified EUI-64 from the Ethernet source address and compares it with the low 64 bits of the IPv6 source address. The existing guard only rejects an invalid MAC header when `par->fragoff != 0`. For packets with `par->fragoff == 0`, `eui64_mt6()` can still reach `eth_hdr(skb)` even when the MAC header is not valid. Fix this by removing the `par->fragoff != 0` condition so that packets with an invalid MAC header are rejected before accessing `eth_hdr(skb)`.

It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2026-31685 since 03/09/2026. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 06/04/2026).

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 310341 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2026-31685), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 6.12.83, 6.18.24 or 6.19.14 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 9eda5478746ef7dc0e4e537b5a5e4b0ca1027091/807d6ee15804df6f01a35c910f09612e858739a6/309ae3e9a51a69699ca94eac5fac5688fa562d55/fdce0b3590f724540795b874b4c8850c90e6b0a8 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (310341) and EUVD (EUVD-2026-25652). Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
