Linux Kernel up to 6.19.9 batman-adv packet_len allocation of resources

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

It is recommended to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.19.9. This affects some unknown processing of the component batman-adv. The manipulation of the argument packet_len with an unknown input leads to a allocation of resources vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-770. The product allocates a reusable resource or group of resources on behalf of an actor without imposing any restrictions on the size or number of resources that can be allocated, in violation of the intended security policy for that actor. The impact remains unknown. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: batman-adv: avoid OGM aggregation when skb tailroom is insufficient When OGM aggregation state is toggled at runtime, an existing forwarded packet may have been allocated with only packet_len bytes, while a later packet can still be selected for aggregation. Appending in this case can hit skb_put overflow conditions. Reject aggregation when the target skb tailroom cannot accommodate the new packet. The caller then falls back to creating a new forward packet instead of appending.

The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2026-31683 since 03/09/2026. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 310343 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2026-31683), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 5.10.253, 5.15.203, 6.1.167, 6.6.130, 6.12.78, 6.18.20 or 6.19.10 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 67176c96f325837b0bb3e9538ca2eba414f447d8/0b10a8b355c3f71012ce89289ec2c2f5e3bfd6c1/6755347c5f9bdd44dee80f692208b056fcd40a52/1ada20331f2df2a942d6b83ae1f04a304b642e2a/6e40ebb999c2c3d2fbb3cacb61f0384ee6e69075/0e35db29fc5a97a8553f7c2d3a2ba730e46b1ee8/eda89a1bae0602aec8314ced299bb243b9f9aeef/0d4aef630be9d5f9c1227d07669c26c4383b5ad0 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
