Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in MIT Kerberos 5 up to 1.22.2. This issue affects the function gss_accept_sec_context of the file /etc/gss/mech of the component NegoEx Mechanism Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:
In MIT Kerberos 5 (aka krb5) before 1.22.3, there is a NULL pointer dereference if an application calls gss_accept_sec_context() on a system with a NegoEx mechanism registered in /etc/gss/mech. An unauthenticated remote attacker can trigger this, causing the process to terminate in parse_nego_message.
The advisory is shared at web.mit.edu. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2026-40355 since 04/11/2026. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
