Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in MIT Kerberos 5 up to 1.22.2. Affected is the function gss_accept_sec_context of the file /etc/gss/mech. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer underflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-191. The product subtracts one value from another, such that the result is less than the minimum allowable integer value, which produces a value that is not equal to the correct result. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:
In MIT Kerberos 5 (aka krb5) before 1.22.3, there is an integer underflow and resultant out-of-bounds read if an application calls gss_accept_sec_context() on a system with a NegoEx mechanism registered in /etc/gss/mech. An unauthenticated remote attacker can trigger this, possibly causing the process to terminate in parse_message.
The advisory is shared for download at web.mit.edu. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2026-40356 since 04/11/2026. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 07/08/2026).
