Details
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in MIT Kerberos 5-1.6 (Network Authentication Software). Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code in the library lib/gssapi/krb5/k5unseal.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Double free vulnerability in the GSS-API library (lib/gssapi/krb5/k5unseal.c), as used by the Kerberos administration daemon (kadmind) in MIT krb5 before 1.6.1, when used with the authentication method provided by the RPCSEC_GSS RPC library, allows remote authenticated users to execute arbitrary code and modify the Kerberos key database via a message with an "an invalid direction encoding".
The bug was discovered 04/03/2007. The weakness was shared 04/05/2007 as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). It is possible to read the advisory at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2007-1216 since 03/02/2007. The attack can be launched remotely. A single authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 26144 (HP-UX PHSS_34991 : HP-UX running Kerberos, Remote Arbitrary Code Execution (HPSBUX02217 SSRT071337 rev.2)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family HP-UX Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 156081 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for krb5 (ELSA-2007-0095)).
Upgrading to version 1.6.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (33413), Tenable (26144), SecurityFocus (BID 23282†), OSVDB (34105†) and Secunia (SA24706†). The entries VDB-36017 and VDB-36016 are related to this item. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
