Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as very critical, was found in Microsoft Windows NT 4.0/2000/XP/Vista (Operating System). This affects an unknown code block of the component OLE Automation. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Heap-based buffer overflow in Object Linking and Embedding (OLE) Automation in Microsoft Windows 2000 SP4, XP SP2, Server 2003 SP1 and SP2, Vista, Office 2004 for Mac, and Visual basic 6.0 SP6 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted script request.
The bug was discovered 02/12/2008. The weakness was presented 02/12/2008 by Ryan Smith Alex Wheeler with IBM ISS X-Force as MS08-008 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). It is possible to read the advisory at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2007-0065 since 01/04/2007. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 06/14/2025). The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1059 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $100k and more. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 31042 (MS08-008: Vulnerability in OLE Automation Could Allow Remote Code Execution (947890)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90427 (OLE Automation Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS08-008)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch MS08-008 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 5917.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (33226), Tenable (31042), SecurityFocus (BID 27661†), OSVDB (41463†) and Secunia (SA28902†). Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
