Linux Kernel up to 6.18.21/6.19.11 intel_pmu_hw_config out-of-bounds

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.18.21/6.19.11 and classified as problematic. This issue affects the function intel_pmu_hw_config. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-125. The product reads data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. Impacted is confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: perf/x86: Fix potential bad container_of in intel_pmu_hw_config Auto counter reload may have a group of events with software events present within it. The software event PMU isn't the x86_hybrid_pmu and a container_of operation in intel_pmu_set_acr_caused_constr (via the hybrid helper) could cause out of bound memory reads. Avoid this by guarding the call to intel_pmu_set_acr_caused_constr with an is_x86_event check.

It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2026-31782 since 03/09/2026. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 316948 (Amazon Linux 2023 : bpftool6.18, kernel6.18, kernel6.18-devel (ALAS2023-2026-1746)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 6.18.22 or 6.19.12 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch e435a30ca6fe14c9611b1fc731c98a6d28410247/bfee04838f636d064bc92075c65c95f739003804/dbde07f06226438cd2cf1179745fa1bec5d8914a is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
