Linux Kernel up to 6.19.11 ulpi_register_interface double free

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.19.11. Affected is the function ulpi_register_interface. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a double free vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-415. The product calls free() twice on the same memory address, potentially leading to modification of unexpected memory locations. The impact remains unknown. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: usb: ulpi: fix double free in ulpi_register_interface() error path When device_register() fails, ulpi_register() calls put_device() on ulpi->dev. The device release callback ulpi_dev_release() drops the OF node reference and frees ulpi, but the current error path in ulpi_register_interface() then calls kfree(ulpi) again, causing a double free. Let put_device() handle the cleanup through ulpi_dev_release() and avoid freeing ulpi again in ulpi_register_interface().

The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2026-31759 since 03/09/2026. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 05/28/2026).

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 316948 (Amazon Linux 2023 : bpftool6.18, kernel6.18, kernel6.18-devel (ALAS2023-2026-1746)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 5.10.253, 5.15.203, 6.1.168, 6.6.134, 6.12.81, 6.18.22 or 6.19.12 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 2f70ba9dae13a190673cc3f9b4aad52179738f60/ee248e6e941e4f2e634df2bd43e5f1ef810ab6df/272a9b26c336a295e4e209157fed809706c1b1f7/aaeae6533d77e6ed4def85baec01e2815ebbef61/8763f8317bb389aded32a32b08f6751cfff657d2/38c28fe25611099230f0965c925499bfcf46a795/a6e5461f076c2ef63159f18e5cdbd30b50f0bc15/01af542392b5d41fd659d487015a71f627accce3 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
