Details
A vulnerability was found in GreycLab CImg. It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is the function _load_pnm of the component PPM File Handler. The manipulation of the argument dimension with an unknown input leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. As an impact it is known to affect integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
CImg Library is a C++ library for image processing. Prior to commit 4ca26bc, there is an integer overflow vulnerability in the W*H*D size computation inside _load_pnm() that can bypass the memory allocation guard. A crafted PNM/PGM/PPM file with large dimension values causes the overflow to wrap around, allocating an undersized buffer and potentially triggering a heap buffer overflow. Any application using CImg to load untrusted image files is affected. This issue has been patched via commit 4ca26bc.
The advisory is shared at github.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2026-42144 since 04/24/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
