Details
A vulnerability was found in dani-garcia vaultwarden up to 1.35.4 and classified as problematic. This issue affects the function validate_webauthn_login of the component WebAuthn Two-Factor Authentication. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a data authenticity vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-345. The product does not sufficiently verify the origin or authenticity of data, in a way that causes it to accept invalid data. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:
Vaultwarden is a Bitwarden-compatible server written in Rust. In versions 1.35.4 and earlier, the WebAuthn authentication flow in `validate_webauthn_login()` updates persistent credential metadata (1backup_eligible1 and 1backup_state flags1) based on unverified `authenticatorData` before signature validation is performed. An attacker who knows a user's password but cannot produce a valid WebAuthn signature can permanently modify the stored backup flags for that user's credential. If signature verification fails, the database update is not rolled back. This can result in a persistent denial of service of WebAuthn two-factor authentication for affected credentials. This issue has been fixed in version 1.35.5.
The advisory is shared at github.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2026-31835 since 03/09/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
Upgrading to version 1.35.5 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at github.com.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at EUVD (EUVD-2026-27424) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2026-1285). If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
