Details
A vulnerability was found in ProFTPd up to 1.3.9a. It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function sqltab_fetch_clients_cb of the file contrib/mod_wrap2_sql.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a sql injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-89. The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
In ProFTPD through 1.3.9a before 7666224, a SQL injection vulnerability in sqltab_fetch_clients_cb() in contrib/mod_wrap2_sql.c allows a remote attacker to inject arbitrary SQL commands via a crafted domain name that is accessed in a reverse DNS lookup. When "UseReverseDNS on" is enabled, the attacker-supplied hostname is passed unescaped into SQL queries. The character restrictions of DNS names may affect exploitability.
The advisory is shared at github.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2026-44331 since 05/05/2026. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1505 for this issue.
