Linux Kernel up to 6.19.5 ocfs2 __counted_by memory leak

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability described as critical has been identified in Linux Kernel up to 6.19.5. Affected by this vulnerability is the function __counted_by of the component ocfs2. Such manipulation leads to memory leak. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2026-43168. There is no exploit available. Upgrading the affected component is recommended.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.19.5. It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is the function __counted_by of the component ocfs2. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory leak vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-401. The product does not sufficiently track and release allocated memory after it has been used, which slowly consumes remaining memory. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ocfs2: fix reflink preserve cleanup issue commit c06c303832ec ("ocfs2: fix xattr array entry __counted_by error") doesn't handle all cases and the cleanup job for preserved xattr entries still has bug: - the 'last' pointer should be shifted by one unit after cleanup an array entry. - current code logic doesn't cleanup the first entry when xh_count is 1. Note, commit c06c303832ec is also a bug fix for 0fe9b66c65f3.

The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-43168 since 05/01/2026. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 318589 (Oracle Linux 10 / 9 : Unbreakable Enterprise kernel (ELSA-2026-50293)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 5.10.252, 5.15.202, 6.1.165, 6.6.128, 6.12.75, 6.18.16 or 6.19.6 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch c44d86ca949cb1e5566ad14510cc26fa1a17e2d8/8ff329353134280b203cb2bce95311cb8f7cbd8a/bb273b68c1719c2925e05557f7e7099edb066680/b2952dbeac2c3c527cb0519d5ffaeb95b062466a/3bdc3766aafb052aef4baadef455a84c1c0a059d/2f4daccd9d9b8b2952df7878df8c2e8ba6439398/5138c936c2c82c9be8883921854bc6f7e1177d8c is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
