Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Open Notebook up to 1.8.3. This issue affects some unknown processing of the component Docker Container Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Impacted is integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Lack of user input validation in the file upload functionality of Open Notebook v1.8.3 allows the application user to create or modify files on the docker container via path traversal.
The weakness was shared by CERT-EU as GHSA-x4q2-89g5-594v. The advisory is shared at github.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2026-33588 since 03/23/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
