Details
A vulnerability was found in dail8859 NotepadNext up to 0.13. It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function detectLanguageFromExtension. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Notepad Next is a cross-platform, reimplementation of Notepad++. Prior to version 0.14, NotepadNext's detectLanguageFromExtension() function interpolates a file's extension directly into a Lua script without sanitization. An attacker can craft a filename whose extension contains Lua code, which executes automatically when the victim opens the file in NotepadNext. Because luaL_openlibs() is called unconditionally, the full os, io, and package libraries are available to the injected code, enabling arbitrary command execution. This issue has been patched in version 0.14.
The advisory is shared at github.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2026-42214 since 04/25/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059 for this issue.
Upgrading to version 0.14 eliminates this vulnerability.
