PHP up to 8.2.30/8.3.30/8.4.20/8.5.5 ext/standard/metaphone.c metaphone integer overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in PHP up to 8.2.30/8.3.30/8.4.20/8.5.5. It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects the function metaphone of the file ext/standard/metaphone.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

In PHP versions 8.2.* before 8.2.31, 8.3.* before 8.3.31, 8.4.* before 8.4.21, and 8.5.* before 8.5.6, the metaphone() function in ext/standard/metaphone.c uses a signed int variable to track the current position within the input string. If a string longer than 2,147,483,647 bytes is passed, a signed integer overflow occurs, resulting in undefined behavior. This can lead to an out-of-bounds read, causing a segmentation fault or access to unrelated memory, and may affect the availability of the PHP process.

The weakness was presented by Aleksey Solovev as GHSA-96wq-48vp-hh57. It is possible to read the advisory at github.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2026-7568 since 04/30/2026. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 07/03/2026).

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 313734 (Fedora 44 : php (2026-c66eaae759)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 8.2.31, 8.3.31, 8.4.21 or 8.5.6 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (313734) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2026-1433). Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
