Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in jqlang jq up to 1.8.1. This vulnerability affects an unknown code block of the component JSON Parser. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a neutralization of null byte vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-158. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes NUL characters or null bytes when they are sent to a downstream component. As an impact it is known to affect integrity. CVE summarizes:
jq is a command-line JSON processor. In 1.8.1 and earlier, Top-level jq programs loaded from a file with -f are truncated at the first embedded NUL byte on current upstream HEAD. A crafted filter file such as . followed by \x00 and arbitrary suffix compiles and executes as only the prefix before the NUL. This leaves jq with a post-CVE-2026-33948 prefix/full-buffer mismatch on the compilation path even though the JSON parser path has already been fixed.
The advisory is available at github.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2026-41256 since 04/18/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
