Linux Kernel 2.4.34/2.6.20.5 dn_fib.c input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel 2.4.34/2.6.20.5 (Operating System). It has been rated as problematic. Affected by this issue is an unknown code block of the file dn_fib.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:

A typo in Linux kernel 2.6 before 2.6.21-rc6 and 2.4 before 2.4.35 causes RTA_MAX to be used as an array size instead of RTN_MAX, which leads to an "out of bound access" by the (1) dn_fib_props (dn_fib.c, DECNet) and (2) fib_props (fib_semantics.c, IPv4) functions.

The weakness was shared 04/22/2007 (Website). The advisory is available at debian.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2007-2172 since 04/22/2007. Local access is required to approach this attack. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 25963 (Debian DSA-1363-1 : linux-2.6 - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 155181 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Kernel Security and Bug Fix Update (ELSA-2007-1049)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 5 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (33979), Tenable (25963), SecurityFocus (BID 23447†), OSVDB (37121†) and Secunia (SA25288†).
