Details
A vulnerability was found in Apple Safari (Web Browser) (version now known). It has been declared as very critical. This vulnerability affects the function toQTPointer in the library qtjava.dll of the component QuickTime Java. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Apple QuickTime Java extensions (QTJava.dll), as used in Safari and other browsers, and when Java is enabled, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via parameters to the toQTPointer method in quicktime.util.QTHandleRef, which can be used to modify arbitrary memory when creating QTPointerRef objects, as demonstrated during the "PWN 2 0WN" contest at CanSecWest 2007.
The weakness was disclosed 04/24/2007 by Dino Dai Zovi as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is available at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2007-2175 since 04/24/2007. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 02/02/2025).
It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as highly functional. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 25122 (Quicktime < 7.1.6 quicktime.util.QTHandleRef toQTPointer Method Arbitrary Code Execution (Mac OS X)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 15238. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 5310.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (33827), Exploit-DB (16295), Tenable (25122), SecurityFocus (BID 23608†) and OSVDB (34178†). If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
