Adversarial Robustness Toolbox up to 1.20.1 Kubeflow torch.load model_id deserialization

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability categorized as critical has been discovered in Adversarial Robustness Toolbox up to 1.20.1. The impacted element is the function torch.load of the component Kubeflow. Executing a manipulation of the argument model_id can lead to deserialization. This vulnerability appears as CVE-2026-31229. The attack may be performed from remote. There is no available exploit.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Adversarial Robustness Toolbox up to 1.20.1. It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects the function torch.load of the component Kubeflow. The manipulation of the argument model_id with an unknown input leads to a deserialization vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-502. The product deserializes untrusted data without sufficiently verifying that the resulting data will be valid. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

The Adversarial Robustness Toolbox (ART) thru 1.20.1 contains an insecure deserialization vulnerability (CWE-502) in its Kubeflow component's model loading functionality. When loading model weights from a file (e.g., model.pt) during robustness evaluation, the code uses torch.load() without the security-restrictive weights_only=True parameter. This allows the deserialization of arbitrary Python objects via the Pickle module. An attacker can exploit this by uploading a maliciously crafted model file to an object storage location referenced by the pipeline, or by controlling the model_id parameter to point to such a file. When the pipeline loads the model, the malicious payload is executed, leading to remote code execution.

The advisory is available at github.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2026-31229 since 03/09/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 05/12/2026).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
