Details
A vulnerability was found in AMD EPYC 9004 Processors, EPYC 7003 Processors, EPYC 9005 Processors, EPYC 8004 Processors, EPYC Embedded 7003 Processors, EPYC Embedded 9004 Processors, EPYC Embedded 8004 Processors and EPYC Embedded 9005 Processors. It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown processing. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a security-sensitive hardware controls with missing lock bit protection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-1233. The product uses a register lock bit protection mechanism, but it does not ensure that the lock bit prevents modification of system registers or controls that perform changes to important hardware system configuration. As an impact it is known to affect integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Missing lock bit protection for NBIO registers could allow a local admin-privileged attacker to modify MMIO routing configurations, potentially resulting in loss of SEV-SNP guest integrity.
The advisory is shared at amd.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2025-61971 since 10/04/2025. The exploitation appears to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. The exploitation needs additional levels of successful authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
